At St Richard’s, we use the ‘Caritas in Action’ scheme of work. Catholic social teaching calls us all to work for the common good, help build a just society, uphold the dignity of human life and work for justice.

Our teaching aims to educate our children not just about global issues of poverty but to gain a better understanding of social justice issues in our community and the UK.

Each half term, pupils explore one of the seven strands of Catholic Social Teaching by answering big questions and devising creative responses to demonstrate their understanding of their role in answering these. We then share our work in key stage assemblies.  The themes and big questions are progressive from EYFS through to Year 6.

God made everyone, so we are all brothers and sisters in God’s family wherever we live. God created us as one global family called to support our brothers and sisters.

The children completed some beautiful work in our Caritas in Action ‘Solidarity and the Common Good’ afternoon. Each class studied a big question to explore the challenges and issues that our global families face. We devised ways that we can work together to combat these issues and create a more harmonious society.

‘So when each separate part works as it should, the whole body grows and builds itself up through love.’

Ephesians 4:16

In our ‘Dignity of Work’ Caritas in Action afternoon we explored all aspects of work. We recognised that each of us has been blessed with unique talents, gifts and skills to carry out God’s work and how we can use these to build up God’s kingdom

‘God made the heavens and the earth and it was good.’

Genesis 1:1-31

We celebrated our whole school Caritas in Action afternoon for Stewardship. Stewardship means that we know that all life on earth is sacred and holy and we are responsible and accountable for it. In Laudato Si, Pope Francis urges all of us to step up and take responsibility for protecting the earth and looking after our common home. Right across the school, we explored how we respond to this.

‘This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.’

John 15: 12-17

The whole school enjoyed celebrating our Caritas in Action afternoon for Family and Community. We explored how we are all made in the image and likeness of God and recognised that is important for us to work together to look after and protect all members of our community.
